Hair!

Hair Loss, Thinning hair, all over social media there are miracle cures, potions, spray etc how confusing, what works and what doesn’t?

I have been in the medical aesthetics and cosmetic industry for the last 30 years, also studying nutritional science out of personal interest, before this I was a hairdresser, so I know a thing or two about hair.

Firstly male or female?

Different hormones affect hair growth in males and females, also in women pregnancy , menopause and thyroid issues can impact hair making it thinner and even hair loss. The most significant cause of hair loss in women is female-pattern hair loss (FPHL).

In males the main question is, has it gone completely or is it starting to thin and recede? Male androgenetic alopecia (MAA) is the most common form of hair loss in men, affecting 30-50% of men by age 50.

Total hair loss in a specific area that has been like this for years is gone and the only solutions are hair transplants or camouflage (powder products or hair pieces etc) I will not be touching on these subjects today.

However if you have thinning hair, starting to see some receding areas and have family history of hair loss there are things that can help slow down and regrow in both men and women.

Growth

Hair grows in 3 stages -

  • The anagen phase (growing phase) can last from two years to eight years. This phase generally refers to about 85% to 90% of the hair on your head.

  • The catagen phase (transition phase) is the time that hair follicles shrink and takes about two to three weeks.

  • The telogen phase (resting phase) takes about two to four months. At the end of this phase, the hair falls out. Hairs don’t grow during this stage.

With age, slowed blood supply, lack of nutrients, when in stage 3 - Telogen, hair follicles can lay here dormant, this mean hair is still possible to grow, but is having a long sleep in the follicle in the scalp, not as a growing hair strand.

It is here will can stimulate the growth resulting in thickening hair, strengthening hair in all 3 growth phases and slow patten baldness.

There are many elements and treatment options to consider based on your concern and condition;

Reduce the following, all shown to affect hair growth -

Stress Smoking Sun - wear hat. Medication - Check with Dr or look at side effects

Supplement/Nutrients -

Research has shown a lack in the following may also contribute to thiniing and hair loss

Vitamin D, C, B12. Zinc. Folic Acid. Iron (mainly women)

Treatments -

PRP has been shown to stimulate hair growth agin the Telogen stage is the main target here to get the hair growing, strengthen all hair and follicles and increase blood circulation.

This involves a clinic visit where your blood is drawn, spun and the Platelet Rich Plasma is injected into the scalp

LED - Light Emitting Diodes (low level laser)

This stimulates blood circulation and follicle activity also strengthening current hair - This treatment can be done at home or via clinic visits

Specialised Products - as mentioned there is a plethora of miracle potions on the internet, don’t be fooled, specific ingredients are required to strengthen and stimulate along with specific carrier ingredients to ensure it penetrates through the scalp to the follicle level

Scalp stimulation - simple scalp massages at night can help stimulate blood supply that can speed up the Telogen phase and regrow dormant hair, plus strengthen and slow baldness. A dermal Roller can also be used once a week to stimulate and create open channels for any serums etc to penetrate deeper.
